Media Server:

Q: What is a media server ?
A: Just as web servers (Apache is a web server) serve static HTML pages and images, media servers (like FMIS, Red5 and Wowza) can deliver (and receive) video and audio content to (and from) Flash Player applications (like our flv audio recorder).
Q: What can you tell me about FMIS ?
A: It is the first media server (done by Adobe) and at launch it was called Flash Communication Server. It is now called Flash Media Interactive Server and it costs around $4500 to buy in the US (we know! It's a lot!) but it also has a free version limited to 10 connections. It has good documentation and there are a lot of articles and books explaining all things FMIS.
Q: What can you tell me about Red5 ?
A: Red5 is a free open source alternative to FMIS developed in Java.
Q: What can you tell me about Wowza ?
A: Wowza is a commercial alternative to FMIS that costs about $995, comes with great documentation, a forum and good support. It is developed in Java and it has a free version limited to 10 connections.
Q: Where can I get FMIS hosting ?
A: influxis.com, uvault.com, interlake.net and flashcomhosting.ca all offer both shared FMIS hosting plans (starts at about $9/month) and dedicated servers with FMIS installed!
Q: Where can I get a dedicated server with Red5 already installed on it ?
A: Hostv.com
Q: Can I install Red5 or FMIS or Wowza on my own dedicated/VPS server and use that ?
A: Of course, you can download Red5 from here or purchase Wowza/FMIS from here! You can also use Wowza and FMIS for free if you don't plan on having more than 10 people connected to the media server at the same time!
Q: Can I install FMIS, Red5 or Wowza ona shared hosting account or on a free shared hosting account?
A: No, you need a VPS or a dedicated server.

Absolutely top product! Shame Flash doesn't have this kind of functionality without a media server - we develop solutions for the radio industry and this is right up our street!
